Mixing finishes is one of the hottest trends in design today. While many of the old rules are gone (goodbye “matchy-matchy”), there are some new guidelines that designers recommend to ensure a dramatic look without overwhelming the space.

- Be Intentional – When mixing finishes, it’s important to have a plan to use the selected finish more than once in the space to ensure overall consistency.
2. Bring Balance – Create balance by organizing finishes to create a streamlined look. A good rule of thumb is to avoid having the same metal tone in two different textures in the space (i.e., mixing a polished nickel finish with a brushed nickel finish) because the combination does not provide enough contrast to create interest.
3. Mix it Up – Cabinetry provides an opportunity to mix finishes with flare. In the kitchen, create contrast by having different colors or finishes on upper and lower cabinets. For example, pair lighter color upper cabinets with darker color lower cabinets. Another good option is to choose a different color or material for the kitchen island to make a statement.
4. Look for Pre-Mixed Style – An easy way to add mixed finishes to a room is by selecting modern decorative hardware featuring mixed materials.
